In the absence of an inbuilt DVD drive, I want to be able to attach/detach a portable one easily - it is a complete pain scrabbling around at the back of the machine every time I want to attach or detach a USB or thunderbolt device. I often use USB thumb drives to transfer data and have a thumb-drive style card reader to upload data from my camera's SD card. A regular-sized, modern house, within which my desk has the options of being placed next to a wall or a window. I don't have an enormous, stylish executive office that allows me to place my computer on a desk facing out into the middle of a room where I can wander round and plug in USB devices easily without moving the whole computer. The Retina display is beautiful.įor me, the only annoyance I've found so far has been the absence of front/side-access USB ports.

It is a lovely machine that is beautifully designed and, since I have only recently not been able to update the OS on my old machine, very familiar to use.
No assembly at all was required (on my old iMac, the stand had to be installed - this one ships pre-installed). My old iMac had metal frame running around the top of the screen - this model has glass running to the edges. There hasn't been a huge change in iMac design in the last decade such as the change between the G3 and the G4, or the G5 and the iMac aluminium - this generation of iMac is still aluminium framed, still combines brushed silver-colour metal and glass, the stand is still shaped the same way, the basic screen design follows the same pattern, although the bezel has been significantly reduced in size. Even allowing for the smaller screen size, this machine is tiny in comparison. My 24" machine was small and sleek at the time I bought it. The new model combines the familiar design of my old, much-loved machine with major refinements to sleekness, space consumption, and speed.
The machine does have a smaller screen - but iMacs now only come in 21.5" and 27" and I didn't think I could cope with the larger screen in my relatively small home office.

The machine this replaced was a decade old iMac 24" that had become almost impossible to use since Apple withdrew software support for it - plugins wouldn't update, updates couldn't be installed, new peripherals couldn't always be installed - and it had become very, very slow following the El Capitan update.
I'm probably still in the honeymoon period, but right now I'm somewhat in love with my new iMac.
